VIIcode Oxygen Eye Masks
The under-eye area gets a bad rap in the skincare world because of an insane amount of eye creams, eye gels, and eye masks that don’t actually DO anything. Unfortunately, when it comes to eye creams, it’s common for brands to cut the product size in half and jack the price up by 2-3x more than their regular moisturizers. When you compare the eye cream formula to its corresponding moisturizer, you realize that basically, they’re the same thing.
Now I’m not saying that every brand does this, or even MOST brands, but it’s common enough of an issue that I find it hard to navigate the eye cream\serum\mask world. The other day I spent 3+ hours at sephora.com trying to find the answer to my puffy eyes and dark circles. There were hundreds upon hundreds of eye products and only two of them that looked even remotely promising.
So that said, I think many of us consumers and skincare fanatics are dying for a change when it comes to our under-eyes! We’re craving products that actually WORK, products that are specifically formulated with key actives, and not just another “moisturizer” that costs twice as much for half as much product.
WHAT IS AN EYE MASK? HOW DOES IT DIFFER FROM AN EYE SERUM OR CREAM?
The main difference between a mask and a cream is that a mask is usually a short-term intensive treatment that should yield results quickly. It’s something you use separately from your skincare routine, similar to a sheet mask, but for your under eye area! Usually they come in little cotton pads you place under your eyes for 20-30 minutes, although VIIcode’s oxygen eye masks can be worn up to 8 hours! In that way they are so unique compared to any other eye mask I’ve found! VIIcode’s intensive treatment lasts 16 times as long as most brands, and therefore produces much more tangible results.
In my experience, I usually see more “immediate” benefits from eye masks than I do from eye creams, but you can combine the two products for a more thorough approach! VIIcode makes a killer eye cream as well, and it’s perfect for using right after your oxygen eye masks!
Prior to testing out VIIcode, I had tried several eye masks. Elemis’, Patchology’s, and Shangpree’s. Elemis’ and Patchology’s were my favorite for puffiness but they didn’t really do anything to brighten up my under eye area. Shangpree’s were totally useless to me. So when VIIcode showed up on my doorstep, I was excited and nervous. Would they live up to my hopes for the perfect eye product? First, let’s go over the formula for a second...
GLYCERIN – a natural humectant that draws water to the skin. When glycerin is applied to the skin, it minimizes water loss due to evaporation and maintains the skin’s water balance on an intercellular level– keeping the skin well hydrated and nourished.
MENTHA ARVENIS EXTRACT – aka corn mint or wild mint, has soothing and calming properties for the skin. Helps to cool and depuff.
VITIS VINIFERA SEED OIL – aka grape seed oil, a natural moisturizer that reduces the look of crepey skin. doesn’t leave a greasy residue or clog pores.
SODIUM HYALURONATE – aka hyaluronic acid, which has a smaller molecular size, and therefore is especially penetrative. It’s able to hold more water than any other natural substance—up to 1,000 times its weight in water! Thanks to its super-sized hydrating properties, sodium hyaluronate will result in smoother, softer skin with decreased wrinkles and an all-around fuller appearance.
SODIUM ASCORBYL PHOSPHATE - a shelf-stable, water-soluble form of vitamin c that functions as an antioxidant and is effective for brightening an uneven skin tone! It’s my favorite vitamin c derivative to date, because it’s SO good at dealing with dull complexions. Its antioxidant value helps to decrease fine lines and wrinkles, improve collagen production, and remove hyperpigmentation or age spots.
CAMELLIA SINESIS WHITE TEA EXTRACT - found to have good antioxidant, anti-aging and skin-soothing properties. New studies have found that white tea is 10% more effective than green tea! The application of white tea extract protects critical elements of the skin’s immune system, similar to the way oxidation causes a car to rust, oxidative stress of the skin causes a breakdown in cellular strength and function. The white tea extract protects against this stress.
LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA – aka lavender extract. Anti-inflammatory, soothing, and calming to the skin. It’s the perfect overnight treatment for aging under eyes.
ALOE BARBADENSIS – aloe soothes the skin and protects against UV damage. The herb contains aloin, which can block up to 30 percent of the ultraviolet rays when applied to the skin’s surface. It also helps to stimulate enzyme action in the skin tissue that boosts collagen production! Meanwhile, it has cleansing and detoxifying properties that remove dead skin cells and purify the pores. Lastly, it can act as a wonderful hydrating agent, similar to HA or glycerin, with its humectant properties.
COQ10 – one of the most powerful antioxidants known to man. It helps the skin look younger, firmer, and healthier, eliminating free radicals that cause stress and damage to the skin. Because CoQ10 production declines with age, the topical application of it plays an important role in decreasing wrinkles and fine lines.
BETULA ALBA EXTRACT – aka birch extract which is a natural astringent for the skin! It can help to depuff the sensitive eye area as well as tone the skin.
As you can see, VIIcode has really covered the bases here with their formula! I love that they included vitamin c, white tea, coq10, and hyaluronic acid. It’s a winning combo of botanicals that are known to de-puff, soothe, calm, and treat wrinkles - without compromising your skin health or moisture barrier.
These eye masks have an incredible texture to them! They’re much thicker than most eye masks I’ve tried and quite a bit more comfortable. The gel side sticks beautifully to the skin without moving around or causing a mess. I fell asleep in these on 4 different nights and was so impressed when I woke up with them still perfectly adhered to my under-eyes! I tend to thrash around in my sleep, and these masks stayed put beautifully the whole time! Also, they don’t feel sticky, heavy or gross. Once applied, I notice an immediate cooling sensation that’s really pleasant for my stressed out, puffy skin.
HOW TO USE
You’re supposed to apply these oxygen eye masks directly after cleansing and avoid using serums and moisturizers around the eye area so they adhere correctly. Although the masks work equally well during the day or night, I prefer to wear these to bed, where I don’t notice their presence nearly as much as I would in the daytime. They don’t transfer onto my pillows or bed sheets which means I feel comfortable bringing them with me everywhere. They’re the perfect travel companion!
Another way I like to use these eye masks is sticking them in the refrigerator first! I put them in the fridge along with my facial roller, and retrieve them a few hours later for a cooling, luxurious experience. If you’ve never used a facial roller on top of an eye mask, you’re missing out! The combination is heavenly, and it really seems to decrease puffiness as well.
I used these masks 3 times a week for 2 weeks and absolutely LOVED them. The biggest difference I noticed after removing them, was that my puffiness decreased significantly. In that way, these oxygen eye masks are similar to other eye masks I’ve tried. But where VIIcode really shines is in their ability to brighten the under-eye area. At first I didn’t notice it, but after using these masks consistently for 2 weeks straight, I started to see some changes to my under-eyes. Suddenly, I didn’t have to apply as much concealer to hide the dark circles! My under-eye area had almost the same exact shade as the rest of my face!
Fine lines and wrinkles take a long time to treat, and much of the work that needs to be done is preventative. In that way, I can’t speak to VIIcode’s ability to treat fine lines and wrinkles, only because I haven’t been using them for that long. I do feel like the massive dose of hydration they offer HAS to make a difference with fine lines. How could it not? It lubricates the skin and helps smooth things out.
So is it the inclusion of sodium ascorbyl phosphate that makes these oxygen eye masks so effective? I’m not quite sure, but I think so! This is the first time I’ve seen my under eye area brightening up, even slightly! VIIcode’s combination of botanicals is so effective. I see them working on multiple skin issues at once from brightening to puffiness to hydration.
VIIcode’s oxygen eye masks are definitely becoming my eye mask brand of choice. While I appreciate the results I’ve had from other brands, this is the first time I’ve found an eye mask that is COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO WEAR for a whole 8 hours! Because they’re penetrating the skin for a much longer stretch of time, they make more of a difference in my overall skin tone and texture. They’re also a better bang for your buck! Each oxygen eye mask costs a little over $9 per treatment, but you get SO much use out of them. This is the first time I’ve noticed an immediate effect after using an eye mask. I was blown away.
VIIcode’s oxygen eye masks are definitely on my repurchase list, and they should be on yours as well! If you’d like to try them, you can click here for more info.
*Many thanks to VIIcode for sending me their eye masks to review. As always, all opinions are my own. #sponsored
